Johnfat Sibanda is the new Highlanders Football Club Executive Chairman after edging incumbent Kenneth Mhlophe in a tightly contested election during the club’s members elective congress which was held at the Highlanders Sports Club on Sunday.
The two candidates were separated by five votes after Sibanda garnered 154 votes, while 149 members voted for Mhlophe.
Soon after the election results were announced, an elated Sibanda told Chronicle Sport that he won because he told members of the club the truth.
“I believe I won because I told people the truth. I said this is their team and it’s time now for them to get their team back. I, however, want to state clearly that today Bosso won and the election season is done and dusted, we are one as Highlanders’ members, ayihlome,” Sibanda said.
Mhlophe took to his Facebook page to congratulate Sibanda; “The better candidate has won. Congratulations. Highlanders is the winner. I handover the relay [button] a happy man. I have done my race and I did it well,”
“A good journey it has been Highlanders F.C. We shared good memories, trying times but at the end of the day our Club stood Top. I know that the club is in good hands and trust that the support rendered to me and my executive shall continue building on the foundation we laid. At the end of the day it’s not Mhlophe who lost but Highlanders won,” said Mhlophe on his Facebook page.
In another race, Morgen Dube was elected Executive Secretary after getting 212 votes, beating incumbent Israel Moyo who got 91 votes.
Mgcini Mafu received 176 votes to beat Bhekumuzi Sibanda who got 128 votes for the Committee Member’s post.
